A lot of homes in Boxborough, Acton, Concord, and the surrounding towns were built with 60-amp or 100-amp electrical service that was adequate decades ago but can’t keep up with a modern household running central air, an EV charger, a hot tub, and a kitchen full of appliances at the same time. A panel upgrade isn’t only about adding capacity. It’s also the fastest way to get rid of equipment that’s still sitting in a lot of local basements and is genuinely dangerous: Federal Pacific Electric and Zinsco panels, both installed heavily across this region between the 1950s and 1980s, have documented defects that keep their breakers from tripping properly during an overload or fault. - You’re relying on power strips and extension cords because there aren’t enough circuits
- You have a Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or fuse-box panel
- You’re planning to add central air, an EV charger, a hot tub, or a generator
- Your panel is rated for 60 or 100 amps and your home is over 1,500 square feet
- Your homeowner’s insurance company has flagged your panel brand
- Lights dim noticeably when a major appliance starts up
Choosing the Right Panel Size: 100-Amp, 200-Amp, or 400-Amp
Panel sizing comes down to a load calculation, not a guess. We add up the running and starting wattage of your major appliances and HVAC equipment, factor in planned additions like an EV charger or generator, and size the panel with room to grow rather than replacing it again in five years. Most Metro West single-family homes land on a 200-amp panel, which comfortably covers central air, an electric range, a heat pump, and an EV charger with capacity to spare for whatever comes next.
Larger homes, homes running dual HVAC systems, or homes planning a significant addition sometimes call for 400-amp service instead. If you’re also considering a Tesla or EV charging station, a whole-house generator, or a home addition, it’s worth having that conversation with us before the panel goes in rather than after, since it can change both the recommended amperage and where the new panel gets physically placed.
Our Panel Upgrade Process
We start with an on-site load calculation and a visual inspection of your current panel, service entrance, and grounding system. From there, we handle the permit application with your town, coordinate the temporary utility disconnect with Eversource or National Grid, and schedule the physical swap for a single day whenever possible. During the upgrade, we install new breakers matched to current code requirements, including AFCI and GFCI protection where required, and test every circuit before we hand the panel back over. A final town inspection closes out the permit and gives you documentation for insurance and any future home sale.
Throughout the process, we label every circuit clearly, something that’s frequently missing or wrong in older panels after decades of unrecorded modifications.
